YES, YOU CAN DO IT!
Dealing with Meet Stress
..
As we approach the championship meet season, emotions often run high for swimmers, coaches and parents. While the championship meet is just that, realistically it won't be much different in set up to other US meets this season. Try to avoid unnecessary stress for swimmers by "making too much of it". Swim meets offer learning opportunities at every corner. Dealing with crowds, checking in, finding heat and lane assignments, communicating with coaches, and remembering rules to list a few. If your child seems uneasy about a particular event, or the meet in general, try these tips:
Make sure that you are giving off "good vibes". Children look to their parents for cues on how to respond to new situations. If they hear, " I am not sure that he/she can handle this", then, they will wonder if they can. If you leave extra drive time, pack the night before, and stay relaxed, your swimmer will most likely follow suit.
Coaches do not choose events that swimmers can not handle. Encourage your swimmer to discuss any concerns that they have about events chosen with coaches - before the sign up process if possible. If there is an issue about events, discuss scratching the event with coaches. Whenever possible - if you sign up for it, you should swim it.
Be loving and encouraging. Swimmers get out of the pool and get instant feed back when the go see their coach. One thing to say is, "what did your coach say?" This will help them think about the feedback they were given. Giving hugs and saying, "I am proud of you"or, "It's O.K." are good things to say and do. Not every swim will be a best time, but every swim will be an opportunity to learn something new. |

Swimmers may now sign up for swim meets through email. A Microsoft Word document can be filled out and emailed to Maggie Shook. You may also print off the filled entry form but email is preferred.
The meet information can be found at http://www.ntswim.org/template.php?page=meetinfo.php. The entry deadlines are different then on the website so please check the COR Calendar or ask the coach when the deadlines are.
After filling out the meet entry form, please save it as said on the form (jSmith) and attach to an email to maggieshook@corswim.org.
If you have any questions, please email Maggie. Thank you.
